GME 108 Managing a Successful Medical Practice

One of our newer modules, Managing a Successful Medical Practice, focuses on the business side of medical practice.. As you complete your medical residency program, you will more than likely be interested in learning more about this topic. In the complex and ever changing health care environment in which you begin practicing, you need to be alert to the forces impacting the choices you will make. This module aims to provide you with a brief introduction to the business aspects of managing a successful medical practice. Keep in mind that health care is a volatile field in which change is the only constant. What we have tried to do in this module is paint with a broad stroke that will show you the big picture and give you a framework from which to investigate further the details of any specific practice setting and operation.

The ACGME General Competencies addressed in this module are as follows:

  • Interpersonal Skills and Communication
    • Work effectively with others as a member of the health care team
  • Professionalism
    • Demonstrate a committment to ethical principles pertaining to provision or withholding of clinical care, confidentiality of patient information, informed consent, and business practice
  • Systems-Based Practice
    • Know how types of medical practice and delivery systems differ from one another, including methods of controlling health care costs and allocating resources.
    • Advocate for quality patient care and assist patients in dealing with system complexities.

This module exemplifies the richness the Core Curriculum program has found from working with faculty from participating institutions and private practice. The course development team for GME 108 includes representatives from the UIC College of Medicine, Rush University, and HuTech Resources, LLC a private health care management consulting firm. The course development team hopes you will find this newest module to be of real practical value as you contemplate the transition from the academic environment to the business of health care delivery.
